Pastorre: Now the player has an annual salary of 10 million yuan at the age of 18 or 19. Can he maintain his love for football?
36-year-old former Argentine international Pastorre has participated in FIFA's sports management training courses in the past year. Recently, he was interviewed by the French media "Team News" and talked about his current situation and his views on football today.
Why choose management courses over coaching courses?
First of all, I hope to share my experience and provide help to young people who have just entered the industry. Secondly, I don’t want to transform into a coach because I don’t want to stay in the training center all day. I love managing work, I have a cheerful personality, I love dealing with everyone, and now I have the opportunity to understand the operation of the club from within.
Do you like or dislike in the development of modern football?
This question is difficult to answer because we always compare: "We used to do this, not do that, etc." Life is always changing, but now there is one thing that makes me feel sorry for now, that is, players earn too much money when they are too young, which will make them no longer passionate about football. If a boy of 18 or 19 years old earns 10 million euros a year, can he still put his love for football first? When you make so much money, there will definitely be many people approaching you. They talk about investment, talk about things, but no longer talk about football. My whole life is playing football for football, and investment and everything else are afterwards. Of course, some people are able to keep their enthusiasm, players like Ronaldo and Messi, who make a lot of money, but are still passionate about football and dedicated 100% to football.
So how to correct it?
The key is training, and we need to re-energize people's enthusiasm for football. Nowadays, people are considering more about creating a player style for sale in the future, and no longer paying attention to the potential of a player to develop a certain trait. Fortunately, I met some coaches when I was young and they accepted what I was. No one said to me, "You are too thin, you can't play football like this. Go and do strength training." When I entered the top league, I was able to show my own characteristics.
Now, I think the situation is different. We were preparing to let young athletes play professional football too early. Sometimes I hear coaches tell kids how to pass the ball, but it seems there is only one way. My son loves passing the ball with his outer instep, and if he wants to do so, why stop him? We should give young people the right to make mistakes, because if you don’t make mistakes, you can’t learn. If one or two shots are always required, what will a player do when he faces two to three defenses, especially in a small space? Is it just that the ball is lost? Young players nowadays are no longer good at dribbling.
When you return to work at the club, will you feel the gap because of the changes in the players' mentality?
I hope to gradually change this mentality so that they can experience football in different ways. Today, football has become a profession. Go to the training center for two or three hours a day, then go home, compete on weekends, earn rewards, and that's it. I experienced this in my last two or three years of my career.
When you come to the training ground, you will find that more than 30 young men are holding their mobile phones to browse social media or something, and there is no communication with each other. I never use a cell phone in the locker room, and for me, the locker room is a place to communicate. We will chat with Cavani, Di Maria, Ibrahimovic and others, and will not discuss what photos to post on social media, nor will we care about which brand we sign with, we will talk about football. When we get treatment, we will discuss the upcoming game with the physiotherapist and I will tell Cavani to watch out for the guards for the next game.
Which player looks the most like you now?
I like to watch Liberty One because there are always new stars coming out there. I especially admire Serky. His football is very attractive and lively, and I admire him very much.
