The Semiconductor Center of the National Research Institute established the Silicon Photonics CPO platform and SIG to promote industry development

With the rapid evolution of AI and HPC data base structures, the future performance bottlenecks will depend on breakthrough progress in silicon-optical integration.
Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI) announced the establishment of the "Silicon Photonic CPO Platform and SIG", which has invited domestic and foreign industry partners to join, promote the international semiconductor graduate education system with Taiwan as the core, and develop technologies that are directly adopted by the industry, shorten the distance between research and practice.
TSRI was appointed to the National Institute of Experimental Research and held the Silicon Photonics CPO (Co-Packaged Optics) platform and SIG (Special Interest Group) on the 11th. Representatives from the Belgian Microelectronics Research Center (imec), Synopsys Technology, Shangsing Optical Communications, Anlizhi Taiwan and Taiwan University of Science and Technology attended and supported it.

Wu Zhiwen, chairman of the National Science and Technology Council, said that with the continuous increase in the data transmission speed demand of AI high-speed computing cloud servers, edge computing servers and terminal devices, Taiwan must evolve advanced packaging technology to accelerate the independence of silicon photonic technology and form a production chain. Among them, CPO technology helps upgrade silicon photonic industry, integrate optical components with semiconductor wafers, and improve transmission speed and efficiency.
Wu Zhiwen thanked the partners who promoted the establishment of the CPO platform, including TSRI and imec to break through silicon photonic technology bottlenecks, Synopsys provides EDA tool chain to accelerate research and development, and also promote optical fiber communications, Anlizhi, and Sihua Technology to assist in the upgrading of industry through optical quantity measurement technology. It is hoped that through this platform, more academic and industrial experts will jointly invest in CPO research, so that relevant technologies can not only serve AI servers, but also extend to edge servers and end devices of consumers.
In the era of AI's rise, no country can complete all tasks independently. It must rely on international cooperation and play a key role in Taiwan here. Wu Zhiwen believes that Taiwan is based on advanced chip manufacturing, integrating technology, and developing innovative systems that are widely used in various fields. At the same time, it has joined hands with partners around the world to develop high-frequency, wide and low-energy-consuming AI computing key technologies, and promote silicon photon verification standards, and jointly promote industry development.
